New Zealand Hemp
Mr Gardner, the Chairman of the ITlaxmillera' Association has be n lately in Dunedin,. testing "the strength of the phormium fibre and comparing it with uiaoila. We are indebted to him for three' samples of fibre, about which he has favoured us with the following remarks :—r- •..»■ No. 1 is pure tnanila; No. 2, New. Zealand flax scraped*; Ho. 3; i>iew Zealand flax machine dressed as well as it is possible to dress it with_ our present appliances. .No. I is just double the value of .$6.. 3 in the market to-day. With regard to No. 2, the material is the same as No. 3, but the quality, as far as I can judge is equal to No. I. The difference is made by the] niode of dressing. The rough and severe grinding machinery cut the fibres of No. 3 so that the breaking strain is only a little more than half that of manila. Oould we get our fibre scraped like Hos. 1 and 2, you cad tell what the value of phormium tenaz would be to New Zealand. »
