REPLY TO MR JACOB.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — In your issue of October 4th is a letter from Mr Jacob, who is getting quite an authority on subjects on which, judging by his letters, he does not know much about. To begin with, I think it is ever so much better when a man runs down another man's ideas, to give us something better to contemplate in their place, then we might be led to think there is something in him. This neither Mr Arkwright or Mr Jacob have done. If Mr Jacob will take a stroll as far as Mr Mills' farm on the Cheltenham Cross road, he will there find a practical illustration of the fact of a Boad Board's inability to deal with bridges at all. Ido not think that there is any local body which has had anything to do with bridges bat would be glad to get rid of them at any price, and I hope that Mr Jacob will live long enough to think so too. Next, as to the Kiwitea Boad Board income by subsidy amounting to £300 ; wherever he could have got his information from beats me. Surely he could not have got it from a member of the Board, as I cannot make it come to much more than the half of that amount. Admitting, on a very broad view, that the roads made in the old Eiwitea district are of some benefit to Crown Lands (I presume we may say as much of roads made in any part of New Zealand where there are Crown Lands) Mr Jacob forgets to state that all the money borrowed to make these roads has been re-paid up to date out of Crown Lands rates, which might make people think that the obligation was on the other side. — I am, &c, G. B. Lucas.
