The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1890. The Elections
We now learn the Government have determined that the elections shall be held on the sth PttCflni betnest. There existed a sort of implied pledge that the 12th of November would be the limit but it appears that after giving the matter due considertion the first-named day has been selected. Although this extension of time may not meet the approval of the residents of the large towns, yet it is tbe best possible arrangement that could be made for the residents of the country districts. Of course the Ministry are wise in their generation in thus delaying the elections, because they are pledged to retire from office if their opponents return a majority ; but too much reliance must not be placed on promises of this description. Besides, it is not at all certain that the Opposition will be so successful as their supporters imagine or hope. The Government, as it now exists, has a leader who possesses the confidence of the country, however much it may be dissatisfied with his colleagues, while, on the other hand, the Opposition, so-called, is merely an aggregation of atoms without cohesion. During the time which will elapse between this and the polling day, candidates and electors will be able to become better acquainted with each other and consequently a better understanding be created between them. The real good man will be enabled to show his good points or qualifications, while the electors will, on their side, learn to discriminate between the candidate who seeks election from mere personal ambition and he who is only actuated by a sincere desire to do good, to the best of his power and skill, for his fellow men. _^
