The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1890. The Elections
The contests of the Eangitikei and Palmerston seats are being carried on at present in the mildest possible manner. . All that we know of the the campaign for the Kangitikei seat is that active: canvassing is going on in the villages and settlements in the back country. Bulls, Marton, and Feilding, the towns which will have the largest and most powerful influence in deciding the issue, appear to be taking the matter very easily, and anyone who did not know the people would be inclined to , add — indifferently. What is seething in the minds of , many of the electors; in this part of the electorate, is the moot question as to, whether . the burdans of the people are to be increased by extra taxation in the shape of subsidies to denominational schools'. The electors know already that two of the candidates, Mr Arkwright, for Eangitikei, and Mr Wilson, for Falmerston, are in favor of these subsidies} while Mr Macarthur's views in opposition to any grant in aid of denominationalism are also well known. The people cannot afford to pay more than they are already paying for education. In fact they have to pay too much as it is in the way of taxation, direct and indirect, to care about accepting new responsibilities. . 'No doubt when the writs have been, issued this and other questions will be freely discussed by the several candidates on the public platform.
Is the new Electoral rolls several of the Christian names are either omitted altogether or wrongly entered, 'while the surnames are in many instances wrongly spelled. We advise eyery elector to see for himself that he is properly entered on the roll, otherwise he may lose his right to exercise his franchise. -
