Out of respect to the memory of the late Mr James Beattie, the Feilding Band has postponed their determination to play in the Eotunda to-morrow afternoon, till a future date. The Muuawatu Times thus gently puts it :— The Official Assignee to-day takes under his care a musician and a draper, Mr J. H. Parker, and Mr D. Jobberns having, we regret to notice, been forced to Bock the protection of the Court. On Thursday afternoon a horse attached to a firewood dray, bolted down Kimbolton Road, As the day was warm and the load heavy, the animal thought better of it and pulled up voluntarily after a spin of about half a mile. I We learn from the Manawatu Times that Mr A. B. Lyons, of the firm of Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co., is severing his connection with the Falmerston branch of that firm, and has accepted the management of a large estate in the Hawkes Bay diatriot. A largely attended meeting of employs'* was held in the Barracks last night to consider the question of the Wednesday half holiday. After diacusemn it was decided to send a deputation headed by His Worship the Mayor, to wait upon the one business man who at present is opposed to the movement. In our last issue we stated that two very deserving cases for charitable aid existed in Feilding. Since then Mrs F. Towler has collected on behalf of the widow with four children, about £8 which she has duly hauded over, and Dr Oharlton has been good enough to tender his services gratis in both cases. ' When inviting the attention of our readers to the performance to be given in the Assembly Rooms on Monday night, we haye pleasure in reminding them that Mr Williams was one of the best of the Jubilee Singers who made such a favourable impression on the people here not many months ago. P. Church. Mr Jones, one of the partners of the firm of Jones and Peters, who have nearly completed the Manawatu Gorge Railway contract, has purchased Mr G. ! Death's farm at Cheltenham. He has taken the residence on the Makino road known as " Port's," where he intends to reside for gome time to come. The grass, of this district certainly seems very attractive to the South Island settlors, no less than a dozen families having oome from that Island to take up their abode . | in our midst. | Everyone who has been a resident in this settlement for any length of time will regret to learn of the death of Mr | James Beattie, yesterday forenoon after a prolonged painful illness. The deceased gentleman wag highly respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his kindly, genial, and generous temperament won for him an extended I circle of friends. The funeral will take i ! place on Monday next when the cortege | will leave the residence of the family at j two o'clock m the afternoon. By the mail tram yesterday that grand upstanding horse Diomedes went up to Hawera where he will remain until the end of the season. He is in splendid lettlt and his owner, Mr Heauett, has every reason to be satisfied with his prosI pects. And the success of the progeny i i of Diomedes was shown by the win of I Evelyn of the Maiden Steeplechase and ■ Welter Handicap at the Feilding Hunt ' Club meeting, when that mare displayed | such staying power, and speed ; also by the consistent running of Euclid in two oyents.
