Pleasant Prediction
An English paper publishes a pre- -* diction of a kind ; by no means consoling to New Zealand readers, in which it says: — "Not an .island has been heaved up or' sunk from sight in the Pacific Ocean^lpV th'.e la§t thirty-four years, and geologists say that nature is resting for ar-nygnty effort in the ••; future. An English geologist prethat withinrfifty years a convul? - sion of nature: sink the whole of . New Zealand : fifty feet below r the j surface of the sea." The Christ- i -church Press; : remarks :—We admire 'the cheerful matter-of-fact manner in - which the threatened catastrophe is .announced, fust, as if it. was a matter -■■of small con?iß.q[uence whether New I .Zealand were sunk fifty feet below the ocean, or/Wpwn a few miles into the air. Wclshould like to know who is the English geologist who has committed himself to such an opinion. We fear it would not add much to his - scientific reputation if his name were , made known*
