September 18. The Scotch ironmasters threaten to close eighty of their furnaces if the workmen insist on their demands for increase of wages. Sydney, September 18. The Mayor has drafted a scheme for a settlement of the present labour dispute on the basis of arbitration, and proposes that the question be referred to a Board of Arbitration, consisting of the Mayors of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, and other gentlemen possessing the confidence of both sides. His Honor Sir JV M. Barley, Q.C., Chief Justice of New South Wales, to be Chairman. : Several exciting scenes have occurred in the House of Assembly on the motion for adjournment, and a number of members denounced the Government for the action that had been taken, with regard to the present labour struggle. W. N. Willis, Member for Bourke, excitedly remarked that " the Minister of Publio Works ought to be shot down like a b— — dog." Several other members got at loggerheads, and one case almost ended in a personal encounter on the floor of the Chamber. Wellington, September 19.. Two detachments of special constables under Messrs C. D. Mackintosh and A. Veitch, assembled at the .Queen's Wharf yesterday at 5 p.m., but their services were not required, and they were dismissed at 10 minutes past 5. The free labourers came off the Wharf at the usual time, but very little notice was taken of them. In pursuance of the instruction of Parliament, the Government intend to issue circulars to employees and Unions inviting them to a conference in terms of the resolution of the House. Four out of the 14 Union carters who left Messrs Cottrell and Co.'s employ have returned to work. The places of the other men are being filled by nonUnionists. The Union Company will run a more extended service next week, and anew time-tablfr is how being prepared.. , Oahabu Sept. 18 Mr J. A. Millar, of the Maritime Council, visited Oamaru to-day and addressed a mass meeting on. the cricket ground. A resolution was passed at the meeting m favour of .making a collection in aid of the strike fund. A very enthusiastic meeting] was held in the Volunteer Hall in the evening, when Mr Millar again addressed a large attendance: He said the railway men would not be called out at the present time, and urged the Unionists to bring forward candidates of their own class for Parliament. He felt sure the Unionists could put in two-thirds of the members if they gave block votes. : Chbistchtthch, September 18 A mass meeting of men on strike |in Lyttelton was held this afternoon attended by about. 500. A committee was appointed to take steps to return' a labour candidate to Parliament. . DtrNEDiN. September 18. This morning Mr Newton, President of the Dunedin branch of the Bailway Servants 1 Society, was called before Mr Grant, Traffic Manager, who read a telegram from the Commissioners accusing Newton of delivering a speech calculated to cause disobedience and trouble among the men, and directing that Newton must undertake unreservedly to obey the rules, and abstain from inciting the men to disorder, or leave the service. Newton said he did not think his speech incited the men, but he undertook not to further incite them, but would stick to his union. Grant said he would communicate the answer to the Commissioner's.
