The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, SEPT. 18, 1890. The Railway Commissioners
By our telegrams yesterday we were informed that the Railway Commissioners had taken a firm stand, and refused to meet a deputation* of the Railway Executive to discuss the situation. In this determination the Commissioners will be supported by every right- thinking man in the colony. Had it not been for the firm front these gentlemen have shown throughout, the whole internal trade of the country would have been at a complete standstill owing co the stoppage of the train service, because on the first symptoms of weakness on their part a great majority of the men employed on the railway would have gone out with the other Unions. It should be a subject for universal congratulation that, the management of the affairs of pur Hallways no longer remains in the hands of the Ministry. Had such unfortunately been the case, all control would have been snatched from the w.eak and neio^lesa grasp of the hands of those to whom the destinies of the country have been entrusted, and it is impossible for anyone to conceive the chaos which would have followed. In his very excellent speech in the House Mr Withy, the member for Newton, in referring to the dismissal of the four members of the Railway Executive (the subject matter to have been discussed by the deputation which the Oommissioners have refused to receive) j said : "If he had been in the position ! of the Commissioners he would have been inclined to give the four men more time to* consider their position. Still the Commissioners had received a considerable amount of provocation." That may be so ; but, on the other hand, the Commissioners also knew that the country would expect them to do their duty at all hazards, and .we are glad that their courage did not fail them at the crucial moment.
