H« had come to open an Assembly of theKnights of Labor, but at the desire of the meeting gave an outline of his views on political questions. He opposed the present ministry ; supported one per cent tax on unimproved value of land; income tax; abolition of Customs duties on necessaries of life to extent of £250,000 ; abolition of Property Tax, reform of the Upper House, and repeal of the Bankruptcy Laws. The meeting received the address very well, but at the request of the candidate passed no vote.
