Knights of Labor
The meeting in the Assembly Booms on Thursday last, called for the purpose of. receiving further information as to the principles nml th« working of tlm KniHits of Labor organisation, was not v<- y .ell a: tended, owiriij, no doubt, to the inclement we:t er prevailing. Mr Pirnni. dolegate from Palmerston, made a few remarks on the benefits to be derived from establishing a branch of the order, but he would not enter into details as most of those in attendance thit night hsul been present at the assemblage on the previous Saturday evening, when he explained, to the best of his ability, the principles of the organisation. Mr Pirani briefly touched on Mr Saxon's letter and his reply which appeared in the Star. He considered no harm to the order would result by the former gentleman's remarks. He thanked the Star for inserting letters bearing on the subject, remarking that in these days newspaper proprietors could not always allow their journals to be u«ed for the discussion of any new thing that cropped up. In answer to a question Mr Pirani said the pledge taken by members was one of honour, and there was no necessity to keep the business of the order secret. In response to an invitation from the speaker eight new members joined the Knights. After the public meeting the doors were closed and the assembly was held, when it was decided to permanently engage the Foresters' Hall for the regular meetings, the next meeting to be held in the Assembly Rooms on Saturday, September 13. It waa unanimously resolved to invite Sir George Grey to visit Feilding and deliver an address on the political and social questions of the day, immediately after his visit to Palmerston, and that should he consent His Worship the Mayor be asked to preside.
At a special meeting of the Knights of Labor at Wellington on Wednesday night a vote of censnre was passed upon the Union Steam Ship Company for joining the Shipowners' Association, and upon the conduct of those men who, being financial members, have not obeyed the call out by the Executive of their Unions, and steps are to be taken to prevent them joining any Assembly of the Knights of Labour.
