Froai^orrespondenc© received from the Agimt-General they find -that the fibre asat^present exported is chiefly used for rose br| twine making, but are of opinion thai the phormium fibre is capable of more extensive use. They, therefore, recommend that the Government should oflfer a. bonus of -210,000 to be devoted to the^ following, purposes :—For a process of . flax dressing which will reduce the cost of production; for a "process which will mi I proye^ the quality of dressed fibre, making it suitable for textile purposes ; for a mode ' of Utilising the waste products ofthe industry. They further recommend that Btgp&be taken to establish classification at -the port of export, to be undertaken by inspectors appointed by the Government, ■ and that the Government should confer with the hemp millers for the purpose of framing regulations for this purpose. Thp 'committee report that dampness merely has the effect of rotting or so seriously discoloring the fibre as to render it almost valueless on reachmg the Home ■ market.
