A curious little libel case was " settled out of Court " in Hawke's Bay lately (nays the Dunedm Star). At a meeting of a town board the chairman made some .statements damaging to the clerk, and !h' : se statements were published in the !o;al paper. The clerk went to tte proprietor of the paper and admitted that the report was a correct one, but said it was libellous and he must take legal pro ■ eedings. These were commenced, and u've guineas claimed as damages. The newspaper man, however, was willing to pay three guineas, and his offer was ultimately accepted. The anniversary services in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church were held last Sunday, Mr J. Knott, the well-known temperance lecturer, officiating. The Chapel was crowded both morning and evening by an attentive congregation, the ability of the preacher being highly commented upon by those present. Last eyening the annual Soiree was held, which was — as is usual on such occasions — very largely attended, no less than three sittings at the tables having to be provided for, those present relishing ihe excellent repast prepared for them. After the tables had been cleared a public meeting was held, the Chapel again being crowded. Addresses were given by the Revds Murray and Harris, Mr Knott, and Capt. Ellis. The choir rendered Borne yery beautiful hymns during the evening, Miss Bird presiding at the organ.
