I |_P^E UNITED PBES3 ASSOCIATION, j London, August 13. The strikes in South Wales affect 70,000 people. The prospect 9of an accommodation being arrived at are improviug. Rioting, followed by a strike, has occurred among the workmen in the quarries on Mr Parnell's estates. The Dublin and Wexford Railway strike has collapsed. The losses br the Cardiff strike are estimated already at a quarter of a million. Sydney, Aupust 15. At noon to-day officers of steamships gave the owners 24 hours' notice of their intention to leave the vessels. The seamen will shortly follow. PALMERSTOtf NORTH, This I ft \ Nearly seven hundred people attended the open meeting in connection with the Confidence Assembly of Knights of Labor laet night. Walter Hill's lecture on wages with single tax as a remedy for the depression was enthusiastscally received, and capitally delivered. Addresses were also given on the labor question and on the objects of the Knights of Labor. At the conclusion of the meeting a motion was carried amidst tutnul uous cheers asking the Knights to invite Sir George Grey to deliver an address on the political and social questions of the day in Palmerston North. Gbrymodth, August 15 The dismantling of (he Wallsend mine is now completed. Every thing at the mine is now stopped The fan, pumps, and fires are drawn. All ban -fs are now discharged. It is stated that should tlio times improve an attempt will be made to rework the mine, but even then it would take three months to pumji it out.
