The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1890. The Butter Trade
Some few months ago we published particulars of the returns for a eonsigumeot of butter sent from Feikliug to London, by Mr W. G. Haymttle, and at the conclusion of our notice said that according to consignees advices, it was expected the following shipment would meet a better market. This anticipation does not appear to have been realised, because we have now before us the account sales of the shipment referred to, and the results are even more unsatisfactory than the results of the shipment of which we have already given the particulars. The second lot consisted of 43 kegs, which contained 26171b5, purchased at 6d. This with 3s each for the kegs gives the first cost of the whole £71 17s 6d. To this must be added— .t s. a. Insurance 14 1 Freight and wharfage ... 15 18 6 Freezing 1 17 6 Premium for space in ship ... 3 0 0 Warehouse brokerage and commission 4 15 5 £26 15 6 Making a total cost of £98 13s to land it in London. Now for the sale, which was to do so much. These forty-three kegs of butter, weighing in all 23cwt. lqr 131b5., realised at 44s per cwt. £51 8s Id, which deducted from £98 13s leaves a loss of £47 4s lid, to which has to be added £2 12s, the freight from Feilding to Wellington by rail. This is very different to what was expected. We certainly do not expect colonial piod ne shipped to England to pay a brilliant dividend when it costs, say, tweutvfive pounds a ton to land it at its market. Taking the ship's freight £14 8s 4d, and the premium of £3 paid for spacn, it seems to us thar these charges are far bej'ond what is fair or reasonable, and therefore cal culated to act as a deterrent to future shippers. In conclusion we may Btatn that the quality of the butter when it was packed was really first-class.
