TROOPS DESERTING FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
BUTCHERY IN THE STREETS. 300 GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS KILLED. LFSB UNITED PEEBB ASSOCIATION.J Buenos Aybes, July 28. The populace sacked Government House. President Celman's supporters have Buffered seriously in the fighting which has been going on. It is believed the President must resign. July 29, The Navy is unable to approach the city owing to the lowness of the water. One regiment of artillery, three regiments of infantry, a battalion of Engineers and the local military cadets support the insurgents. Two thousand police and the rest of the garrison support the Government. The cause of the rising, is the general discontent of the civilians at the reckless finance of the Ministry. The arrest of General Campos and other officers precipitated the rising. There was awful butchery during the street fighting on Saturday. Matters -were calmer on Sunday, both sides being: engaged in strengthening their positions.. President Celman has returned to the capital with troops and cannon, and insists in an unconditional surrender, but the rebels retort that Celman must resign. The armistice ceased last night, and fighting has begun again. Later. Four warships have taken sides with the insurgents and bombarded the Government position. Some British warships are present. Despite the armistice the insurgents advanced their positions during the night, and fighting was resumed at daybreak on Sunday. Civilians freely joined in and exhibited great bravery. The Eleventh In&ntry Regiments suddenly deserted the Government, ..and approached the rebels without taking the precaution toannounce they were against the Government. The rebel artillery opened fire, and many were mowed down before the mistake was discovered. A bulletin was issued in the afternoon, • claiming that the holy revolution had triumphed, and insisting on a complete change of Government. Owing to 8000> of President Celman's troops,, with-40 pieces of artillery, arriving late on Sunday evening and occupying a strong position on Monday morning, the rebels then simply demanded that the President only should resign, and an armistice was extended till 2 o'clock for a reply. The engagement was simply butchery, and the loss of life has been tremendous. Dr Celman's police and soldiers lost 800 killed, and the police now number .only 500. The civilian troops did most of the fighting, the insurgents being kept. in reserve. Numerous murders and robberies are reported. Every house in the city is barricaded. The principal portion of the polyglot population is holding aloof from the quarrel except the Italians. The Government troops attacked the artillery at noon, but were repulsed with severe loss. The Union Ciyica, a club which has been directing the revolt, rejected the terms of the President. On the decision being announced, the insurgents enthusiastically renewed fighting and the pickets of Government troops were driven in. Telegraphic communication is stopped. London, July 29 In consequence of the outbreak at Buenos Ayres Argentine stocks fell 10 per cent., but they have since recovered five. The cables have been cut off at Buenos Ayres. --ilsP^ <
