The Fielding Star. TUESDAY, JULY 29, 1890. A New School District

Fob some time past there has been < considerable dissatisfaction felt and i expressed in Paluierstou North on the Bubjeet of the general management < of the Education Board at Wanganui. j The outcome is that the school com- | mittee there have passed a resolution to the effect that " Letters be written ( to the various school committees re- < separate educational district, to in- . elude schools from the liangitikei to j the Ofaki rivers." This resolution does not convey much information we , confess, but we presume it was in- ■ tended to be non-committal because 1 in an explanatory letter the Secretary ' states that " a meeting of delegates " ] to be sent no doubt by the assenting committees, will be held '• to fully dis- < cuss the matter." We are also told it is apparently evident " That this ' educational district has a > rapidly ex tended from the original centre, and . also the duties of the executive in ' Wanganui have increased to an unworkable extent, that the time has arrived to take some action conducive to the general welfare and growing demand for closer supervision of mat ters of vital importance. The present staff of the Board is inadequate to cope with that demand, therefore our reason for calling upon you to support us in what we consider a laudable and justifiable movement." We certainly consider the proposal to hold a meeting of delegates to discuss and cousider the requirements of this part of the Wanganui Educational District, L sensible and reasonable ; but we do think, at the same time, that the Palmerston school committee have gone a little too fai, entirely on their own ! responsibility, making such sweeping ' charges against a body which has done such good work in the past. If, after - the proposed meeting of delegates had been held, charges of the kind indicated had been formulated, they would have carried greater weight, because the public would then possess a guarantee that such allegations were made on good grounds and were capable of being provod when the time came. As it is the Palmerston school committee appear to have rather anticipated matters. Although we have in our immediate neighborhood, a great number of school committees, we have . heard no complaints from any one oi them against the Board and its Exe cutive of so serious a character as lo make separation a necessity. That separation must come ultimitely we believe, but when such time arrives , we hope that the disruption will only ' be by amicable arrangement, and strictly according to law and precedent.
