Weatherley's tender of LlO3 7s has been accepted for the Tapuae Ridge road, contract No. 83. The Feilding Brass Band have decided to hold a contest at Easter, open to all bands in the North Island. The programme of the Feilding Hunt Club Steeplechases, to be held on Monday, Bth September, is published to-day. Mr Carthew acknowledges receipt of 10s 6d from the Misses Reid, of Awahuri, collected by those ladies in aid of the Bernardo Fund. The Supreme Court of Saxony has decided that boycotting ia equivalent to disorderly conduct in the first degree, and must be punished as such. We have been requested to announce that Mr Ellery Gilbert, pianoforte tuner, is indisposed, but expects to be in Feilding Borne time during next week. Messrs Stevens and Gorton's new sale yards at Hunterville will be the largest on the coast. They will be capable of holding 7000 sheep and 400 cattle. Mr T. Reid, who died at Wanganui yesterday, is reported to haye been worth L4o,oooat the time of his death, LBOOO of which he has left to local institutions. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 9 a.m. to day : — Warnings for easterly gales and rain have been sent to all places east of Xx k mra, NeLon, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. The book of New Zealand Ferns, published by Mr A. D. Willis, of Wanganui, of which Mr H. C. Field is the author, ia one of the most valuable additions made to the literature of the colony for some years. Mr W. Carthew has been appointed agent for Feilding, and is now prepared to take orders. On Thursday afternoon when Mr Carr was driving down Manchester street, accompanied by Mrs Carr and Miss Liddle, his sister-in-law, the blinkers come off the horse, which, becoming alarmed, bolted. The trap collided with the rail on Man. Chester street bridge and up set. The occupants were thrown out, but fortunately escaped unhurt. Mr E. Jackman stopped the runaway horse before any great damage was done. The Red House still keeps to the front. The new lines in and Childrens Ulsters, "The Moa Boots," new Table Mata, Glassware and Vases, new Lamps ; in fact a host of all the latest novelties — must be. seen to be appreciated. Mr F Abigail, M.L.A. of New South Wales, is hopeful of the success of his scheme for a Union mission to Australia We publish to-day a notification from Messrs Stevens and Gorton to the effect that they will hold a sale of fruit trees, shrubs, &c, at Feilding, on Friday August Ist, also a stock sale on the day preceding. A distinguished lady visitor arrived in Feilding last night and took up her quarters at the Monastery. Her coming j was quite unexpected, and therefore created a sensation among the monastic gentlemen. It is well known in political circles that Mr Ballance, the leader of the Opposition, would look on it as a " sweet boon " if Messrs Seddon and Fish would either go over to the Government aide of the House— or form a little party of their own. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last night Dr Earle was presented with a silver tea and coffee service and salver for 21 years' service as Chairman. Mr Hatley was elected handicapper at L 75 per annum, the ballot resulting — Hatley 14, Evett 10, Henry 9. Our Birmingham correspondent writes: —The roads through these upper districts aro in a fearful and dangerqus state with mud. We are all looking forward to the happy day when the roads will be completed and settlers able to get to their homes in comfort and safety. — The fancy dress ball to be held on Ist August is attracting a good deal of attention. Mayor MacmilLan took them in hand. At the conclusion of the parade Lie at. Kirton complimented the men on the fact of their turning out so well on such a miserable night. One member of the Marton Royal Rifles was pi esent and put in a parade for his company. Richards & Co. have just to hand several varieties of the very earliest Potatoes, among which will be found the Chicago Market, Fidler's Victory, Giant King and the Bruce. This extraordinary Potatoe is now on sale for the first time in New Zealand, and with a limited quantity, should not be missed by grardeners. Full particulars can be had. from Richards &Co. Cobbe and Darragh have purchased, much unler pice, a Warehouseman's stuck of samples of Ladies' stockings and Men's socks. They will sell them 20 per ( ent under regular prices.
