Mrs Purchovr, a dressmaker, who was sleeping upstairs perished in the fire. Oamabu July 17Last night a man named John Palmet broke into the Post Office, but got nothing for his trouble. The man, who left his boots behind, was captured early this morning by Detective O'Brien. Auckland, June 17. Henry Jackson, a deserter from H. ACS, Opal since 1888. surrendered at Warkworth to the police. He said be would rather go back and take his punishment than endure any longer the hardships oi a gumdigger's life. He had been playing truant from school and for several nights slept out in the scrub. New Plymouth, July 17. There is considerable inquiry for land in this district. At tb« Land Office yesterday, for five sections averaging between eight and nine hundred acres each, there were sixty-eight applicants. Complaints are made at Government not putting the land at the back of Whareroa and Makeia reserves into the market, and the want of a road to that part of the country to enable strangers to see the land. Timaru, July 17Mr Turnbull, M.H.R. for Timaru, died at 5 o'clock this evening. He was 64 years of age. He had been very ill for the last nine months with Bright's disease. NAPrBB, July 19.
