I (Notes by Carbine.) The Wellington Steeplechase Meeting comes off on Saturday next, and given fine weather it will, no doubt, be a success. In looking through the list of horses engaged one cannot help noticing the poor class of comqany competing, owing, no doubt, to the best of our crosscountry horses having left these shores for Australia. Mr Evett cannot be complimented on his handicaps, and why Aotea and Jacob are asked to give weight j to such horseß as Buapehu, Gladius and j Eaven in the Hurdles, no one but himself ! can explain. In tho Trial Steeplechase the same can be said about Allegretto (a maiden horse) having to concede 31bs to Waipipi, who beat Kuapehu in the Egznont Hurdles recently, and also finished third to Auckland and Gaspirini in the Steeplechase. The Trial Steeplechase will commence the day's sport, and out of the seven acceptors I like the chanceis of Waipipi (9-0), Allegretto (9-10) and Asper (11-0) in the order named. The Hurdle Handicap should prove an interesting contest, which I think will be fought out between Eaven (9-12), The Dream (9-3) and The Spy (10-3). Hack Hurdles — Jupiter, 1; Delphine, 2. Bracelet — Leonardo, 1. Eight have cried content for the Wellington Steeplechase. Two of these — Darnley and Gladius — made such a display at Napier recently, baulking at nearly every jump, that I fancy they will have " Buckley's show," but if they conld only be persuaded to take their jumps kindly they should be near at the finish. Gaspirini may be reckoned as a " sure 'un " for the fences, and although three miles may be a bit too far tor him, I shall expect him to win, with Orient and Waipipi in the places. In the Selling Hurdles Eaven (9-12), Ruapehu (8-12), and Nap (8-10) read the best of the nine entered.
