More Retrenchment Wanted
The Premier was waited on at hii residence on Saturday afternoon b] Messrs Goldie, Hobba, Lawry, Monk Peacock, T. Thompson, E. Thompson Withy, Harkness, Saunders, anc Allen, who urged upon him the desirableness of further retrenchment. Mi Monk, who introduced the business, said the deputation were satisfied thai retrenchment could be made on the present Estimates to the extent oi £50,000 without at all impairing the efficiency of services. The Premier made a lengthy reply, assuring the deputation that the Estimates had been framed with a view to rigid economy, and that he did not see how they could be reduced without subjecting the public to special inconvenience. If, however, the public were willing to submit, the Government would place itself in the hands of the House. All the members of the deputation strongly urged on the Premier the great necessity for retrenchment and a reduction of taxation.—N.Z. Times.
