Volunteer Items

The Manchester Eifles paraded for inspection last night. Captain Pleasants, Lieutenants Kirton and Gosling, Dr Charlton, and a full complement of noncommissioned officers were present. Several members were, however, fined for being absent without leave. Colonel I Stapp having inspected the corps, they were marched into the Corporation paddock where they were exercised at the new skirmishing drill by Sergt.-Major Macmillan. Sergt. Fowles had charge of the recruits who are making good progress under his tuition. When the men were marched back into the barracks, Captain Pleasants said it gave him pleasure to compliment them upon the progress they were making in their drill. They marched steadier, and were altogether very much improved. The men were then dismissed. There will be an undress parade on Friday the 4th instant.
