The Butter Trade
In our issue of Thursday, the 19th instant, we published a letter from Mr W. W. Corpe, of Makino, addressed to the Minister for Lands. We now publish the reply received by Mr Corpe from the Department : — " General Crown Lands Office, " Wellington, 19th June, 1890. " To W. W. Corpe, Esq., Makino. " Sir, — I have the honor by direction of the Hon. Minister of Lands to thank you for your letter of the 17th instant, making suggestions with reference to the classification of dairy produce for the London market. " In reply, I am to state that the subject is now engaging the attention of the Government, and enquiries are being made generally throughout the colony as to the best means to be adopted for developing the industry to the best advantage. " Your practical suggestions will be takea into consideration with others of a similar nature that may reach the Government in reply to the enquiries now being made. There is one point, however, which seetns worthy of notice, which is that it is undesirable for New Zealand butter to be sold through the same broker in London who sells the admittedly superior Danish and continental butters, which have not the disadvantage ofa long sea voyage as butter from New Zealand has. — Yours, &c, "H. J. H. Elliot, " Under Secretary."
