Protecting Industries
You may encourage the sawmill man by putting a duty on imported timber ; you may encourage the iron miner or the iron roller or the iron merchant by putting a duty on imported iron, or the glassmaker by putting a duty upon glassy but eaii_anyone tell vie oi a protective tariff that will encourage the bricklayer? You may encourage the industry of cutting them up into boards, but how ■can you encourage the industry of the •carpanter who puts those ooards together ? How can you encourage the industry of the railway man wao cdnveys the timber to the market, the industry of the cab driver, the industry of the teamster? How by a p?otec-' five duty, can you encourage the business of the newspaper man, of the minister, of the doctor, of the lawyer ? JEn any : country, if you come to examine the facts, you will find that those industries which no protective tariff can touch far, far exceed, in the number engaged in them, the number •of those industries that protectiye •duties can encourage. Now, there are numberless advantages in the toounty system if we want to encourage an. industry. — Henry George.
