Starvation in Christchurch
(PEE UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION). C'HRTSTCHtrKCH, June 10. A few days ago a poor woman in a state of extreme exhaustion staggered into Mrs Thomson's grocery shop in Colombo street. The proprietress thought at first that the woman was suffering from drink. A moment's examination of the poor creature removed this impression, and an inquiry proved that her weakness was caused by absolute starvation. This was on a .Saturday, and the only sustenance the woman had since the previous Monday was a loaf of bread given her by a neighbour, which the recipient divided with her aged mother. Prompt relief was given, and inquiries were made which proved without a doubt that the case was a most pitiable one. A visit to her cottage at Sydenham in which the two poor women lived showed that, whilst the floors were scrupulously clean, they had almost no furniture and no food. Both are well-known to the neighbours as well conducted and industrious. Though their immediate necessities are cared for, and they are now in receipt of rations from the Charitable Aid Board, they are in arrears for rent. — i — _n 1 1 mi niyiM <■■!■
