Football

... . ♦ General disappointment was felt, notonly by footballers but by a large section of the. public, who assembled on the Oval on Saturday last to witness the match between Marton and Feildmg, owing to the fact of only eight men ofthe Marton team putting jn an appearance. The match was therefore abandoned, and a' scratch game was played with the .assistance of a number of the second fifteen of Feilding, who joined forces with the Martonians and opposed the Feilding firsts. The game was evenly contested for about a qnarter of an hour, when after that repeated scores by the firsts were I the order of the day. I was much disappointed in the play of our reps, the forwards especially taking thingseasy, loitering about the field and watching the play instead of following up smartly. Nicholson was ihe only excep-. tion, he playing a good sterling game right through. ■ , . ■ I would again urge upon the men -who are pioked to do battle with Masterton the absolute. necessity of getting in good fettle. Several of the leading players on Saturday exhibited very poor form, whether from indifference to which way the game went, or from the fact of not I being in condition, I do not know. Maeterton's full strength will be plaoed in the field on Wednesday week, and only assidious practioe and training on the part of the Feilding men will avert the loss of the honors they have already won. Snorkik. . A match between the Palmerston and Feilding boys came off on the Oval yesterday morning, and resulted in an easy victory for the Feilding boys by a goal' and lour tries to a goal. A good number of spectators were present, and enjoyed the game immensely. Young, Haybittle, Rossaman, Walton and Whisker played well for Feilding, while Tarrant, Isherwood and Chriohton were most prominent for Palmerston. Wanganui defeated New Plymouth on Saturday by 12 points to 1. ' Wellington beat Masterton yesterday by 2 tries to nil.
