Kiwitea Road Board

{Continued from last issue). Eeport from -Engineer was read as follows : — " I haye arranged with Gitchard and Co to go on with their contract for . clearing the Awahau road at 7s per chain. 1 have called tenders, to be in at thiß meeting, for most of the work requested in the Feilding Small Farm Block, but could not finish the whole owing to there being so much bush in the road, which I have had cleared,, and will get the re- . mainder laid out and tenders called for the next meeting. I have inspected the ditches complained of on the Pohangina and Ferry roads, and would recommend that they be cleaned out by the roadman. The ground on the Pohangina read acrrii the s.wamps is very much cut up, and will require about 150 loads of gravel put on %o make it passable for the winter. The j formation on the Ferry road is also very { much cut up by the heavy traffic, and I would recommend that about 25 chains - of this road be metalled, also that the <0 Cemetery Reserve at Birmingham be " sown with grass seed." The clearing of the Birmingham came tery was discussed, and the necessity for ■clearing it was acknowledged. The~ chairman suggested that if the ■whole were cleared the part not used «ould be fenced and let so as to pay its own way by the rent. Proposed by Mr ; Haythorne, seconded "by Mr Taylor* That the Engineer be instructed to call tenders for clearing one acre of the cemetery at Birmingham of logs and stumps, and fencing in the same, -also for sowing the whole cemetery with seed. — Carried. , Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by .Mr Haythorne, That permission be granted to Messrs Waugh, Boldin and Hogg to fell road lines fronting, their sections 'on the Board's usual terms. — Carried. • Anent the Onepuhi bridge, the chair:man said he had not done with this matter, «md he intended to get a copy of the evidence given before the Commissioner, by making certain applications which he ■thought would be successful this time. He thought if they joined with the Manchester Road Board in sending their Engineer to inspect the work, the Board -might be interfering where they had no jright as the whole matter was in the - hands of the Rangitikei County County - douncfl. Proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Haythorne, . That in reply to the ap. plication of the 'Manchester Road, it be resolved " This Board does not wish to interfere with the Onepuhi bridge."—Caraned. R& the cave in the side of Mcßeth's Toad, the letter was allowed to lie on the *able until Mr Mills, in whose ward it is, •could attend to it. In the meantime the Engineer, would see what was wanted to be done. Mr Oldershaw's letter was allowed to stand over until Mr Williamson or the JSngineer were present. Mr Kruse's application was referred to the Engineer for the work to be passed. It was reported that no one had been •elected for Mr Shannon's ward, and there fore that gentleman still remained as member of the Board. Be the plotting. of new sections on the 3B&p, the Clerk was instructed to send the office map to Wellington and have what ■was necessary plotted on the said map. Be Mr Hartley's 'application the Clerk -was instructed to write stating he (Hartley) could fell the eoad line on the Board's visual term. There was some general discussion on Hhe subject of the Wanganui Harbor j&oard rates, &c. Mr Bray here entered the room, and «,t the request pf the. chairman gave some information as to the stream near the xoad referred to by Mr Oldershaw, Mr Bray *aid it had been estimated two years ago 4o coat £150 to turn the river, but he would go up and again report on it. Mr Bray asked the Board to excuse the further attendance at the meeting as lie iiad to attend the funeral o f a relatiye. The Clerk reported that only tl t% people had voted for the Ongo loan. The chairman remarked the ratepayer there need not talk of wanting money for .xoads in the iuture if they would not take^ the trouble to vote on such an occasion. Proposed by Mr* Lucas, seconded by Mr Eowles, That the Secretary apply to -the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the amount of thirds accruing from the «ale of sections in the Harbor Board ~Block. — Carried. Mr Lucas contended that the money proposed to be devoted to the purpose be in part expended in his ward. He admitted that the Board would save £100. The chairman explained that even after paying the Pohangina ward what was due there would be a balance left. Mr Haythorne spoke to the same effect. Mr Homer asked if his ward could not claim a share. The chairman replied that Mr Homer's •ward would receive due consideration when it was required. Proposed by Mr Taylor, . seconded by Mr Haythorae, That the debenture be taken up. ■ , . ' „ The motion was lost, but it is understood it will be brought up again when there is a full meeting of the Board.
