Improving the Streets

♦ A few years ago a proposal was made to have Manchester Square made sightly by putting footpaths round it, and planting ornamental trees and 6hrajbs in the four sub-divisions. For some reason or other this proposal was allowed to drop, and the subject consigned to that oblivion which is the Bwallower of so many good resolutions. However, we are glad to know that there is some probabitity of its revival, and hopes are expressed that the en-, trances to the town from the railway, the Awahuri and Kitnbolton roads, with Manchester Square, will be relieved of their present repellant ugliness. For, that they are ugly oannot be denied even by the most loyal Feildingite. Of course to create the beautiful in this instance will require money, and such money will have to be raised by the people ; but that can be done easily enough .if they will only combine and, for the nonce, pull in one direction. We know, in this Connection, 'how hard it is for so-called " practical men" to abandon their prejudices (we beg pardon — opinions) and further the views of their seathetical neighbors who would cultivate the beautiful, but still, even those who believe in the doctrine that virtue is only found in utility and that utility is the sole standard of virtue,* will be satisfied, because the value of all town property would thereby be much enhanced. We hope that the movement, which has only re-commenced, will gain strength day by day, and that in the spriug time now coming, we may see tree planting commenced in the streets bef orenamed.
