Manchester Road Board.
The adjourned meeting of the above was held on Saturday last. Present— Messrs Lethbridge, Wheeler, Downes, Pearce and Purkiss. On the motion'of Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, Mr Lethbridge was elected chairman. Mr Lethbridge briefly returned thanks, and said he would, always endeavor to merit the confidence they had placed in him. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Whibley Bros., calling attention to the state of Whibley's road at the foot of the cutting. From the chairman of the Bunnythorpe School Committee, calling attention to the dangerous state of the approaches to the School. From Adsett Bros., asking the Board to give permission to put a tramway on Reid's Line on the east aide of Taonui road. From Kate Cuff, asking her name to be put on the roll instead of R. Linton for section 5 No. 3 ward. From Robert Linton, re an alleged mistake in the valuation of part of his land. From A. R. FitzHerbert, asking to have the name of Norman FitzHerbert placed on the rate roll with A. R. FitzHerbert and Charles FitzHerbert, for section 465 Ashurst. From E. Sanders, asking the name of James Wood to be placed on the roll for section 46. From H. Crabb, asking the name of T. Gilbert to be put on the roll for section 14. From the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, stating the value of the Board for rating purppses was £461,149, and the amount levied was £34 11s 8d for Hospital, and £57 12s 11d for Charitable Aid. (A memo from Mr Macarthur said the Fitzherbert Road Board had not been included in the Assessment, therefore the amount this Board is requested to pay is more than its share.) From Mr Sandilands, solicitor, stating, re Watershed Road, the Solicitor-General has decided that Road Boards, within Counties where the Counties Act is suspended cannot stop a road under the powers intended to be conferred upon them by the Public Works Act. From H. Perlensky, withdrawing his tender for certain work. From C. Hunt, asking the Board to continue the Watershed road 10 or 12 chains further. From R. James, Ashurst, re a low place in front of his shop. From P. & J. Bartholomew, asking the name of C. Pharazyn be put on the rate roll From E. Osborne, enclosing cheque for £5. From C. D. Fowler, asking the name of R. Woodman be put on the roll for se tion 35, Spur road. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Downes, That permission be given to Messrs Adsett Bros. to lay the tram as requested, subject to the approval of the Engineer.— Carried. Resolved, That Mr Linton's letter, re an overcharge in rates, be held over until next meeting. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Downes, That the names of Kate Cuff, James Wood, T. Gilbert, R. Woodman and C. Pharazyn be placed on the rate roll as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Engineer be instructed to attend to the matter at the Bunnythorpe school gate, complained of by Mr Scheidt.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That the Kiwitea Road Board be asked to join with this Board in sending Mr Bray to inspect the work now being carried out on the Onepuhi bridge, and report upon same.— Carried. A general conversation was held on the subject of the money now being wastefully expended on this bridge. Mr Purkiss thought the Board's Engineer should visit the bridge and report. The general opinion was that any attempts to drive piles into papa rock must end in failure. It was decided that Mr Bray go on Monday accompanied by Messrs Wheeler and Purkiss. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That those who have fenced across the continuation of the Spur road be called upon to erect gates thereon, according to the Road Board's Act.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That with the object of relieving the traffic at present concentrated on the metalled portion of our roads, tenden be called for clearing the sides of the Kimbolton and Makino roads in such sized sections as the Engineer thinks best. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearee, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Engineer have the work done as requested by Mr James, and that his offer to pay half the cost be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer report at the next meeting of the Board on the best steps to take to repair the road referred to by Mr Whibley. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer traverse and report at next meeting on the best line that would continue McRae's road to Gillet's line. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Wheeler, that Malachy McAuliffe's tender for works on Reid's Line he accepted.—Carried. Proposed by Mr. Purkiss, seconded by Mr Pearce, That H. Behrendt's tender for work on Stanway road be accepted.—Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That tenders be called for the supply of about 600 loads of metal for the Stanway road, tenders to be in by Thursday 22nd instant, the chairman and mover to open and deal with tenders.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Pearce, That the action of the late chairman and F. Y. Lethbridge in accepting F. L. Behrendt's tender of 25s per chain for Harrison's road be adopted.— Carried. Mr Wheeler was appointed treasurer for the ensuing year. The usual accounts for the month were passed for payment. The meeting then adjourned.
