Mr Gladstone supported the measure. The Government scheme for paying compensation to publicans whose licenses ure taken away has been published. Mr Gladstone is reticent on the matter, but it is evident that" the Liberals will utilisse the proposal to : damage the cause of the Unionists. * Sir Wilfred Lawson and Mr W. S. Came are organising opposition to the -.proposals. Mr H. M. Stanley received an ovation at St. James* Halt to-day, where he tfaa entertained at a banquet. H.B.H. the Prince of Wales presided. In replying to the toast of his health, Stanley abstained from referring to Emm Pasha or politics. During the debate of the Bill provided for the disestablishment of the Church in ; Scotland, Mr Gladstone asserted that the Church was m a minority r and the burden of proyiding for its utdity rested with its supporters. In his opinion, the Church in its existing form was. not the best embodiment of Protestantism. He would be glad to submit his conduct tothe Midlothian electors.
