Feilding School Election

The annual meeting of householders, for the purpose of receiving the report'of the outgoing School Committee and the election of a new Committee for the ensuing year was held at the School-house last night. The meeting took place in the largest room, which was literally crowded. It is many years since any thing like so much interest was manifested in School matters, and amongst those present were a good number of ladies. His Worship the Mayor was voted, on the motion of Mr Curtis, to the chair, and called on Mr Beading, the Secretary and Treasurer of the outgoing Committe, to read the annual report and balance-sheet, which documents after being read were unanimously adopted. THE ANNUAL REPORT. "Your Committee, in making their annual report, find very little matter requiring special remark. There have been but few cases of absence from the meetings, and then only when other urgent business has intervened. " The School waß examined by Inspector Bmdon in August, and the percentage of passes was 68*6. Each item in the examination papers was carefully perused by the Committee, who were of opinion that considering the many changes that had taken place in the teaching staff during the previous year, and the consequent disadvantages the School labored under, the result was on the whole satisfactory. '•Your Committee have still to report that, several portions of the School buildings need repairs, and especially that the lobbies and the old part of the School need re-roofing. " Your Committee have recognised the great need of shelter (sheds in the playground for the use of the scholars, and with this view a concert was held in December, the nett proceeds of which were £12 10s, which amount has been lodged in the bank as a "special fund account," and when this is augmented to the amount required it is the intention of the Cbmjnittee to carry out this very desirable w.ork. . "The amount of annual grant reoeiyed from the Education Board for ordinary incidental purposes being totally inadequate a circular was issued in July, asking parents to contribute sixpence per quarter, but the response has not been so general as could be wished, and the result is that while nominally there is a small balance in the bank the Committee are not able to discharge the whole of their present liabilities. "The following is an abstract of the annual balance-sheet : — Total Beceipts (with balance £2 10s 3d), £32 0s 3d; i Total Expenditure (with balance £1 4s ' sd), £32 0s 3d.-— W. Clapham, auditor." The meeting was then invited to nominate candidates, and the following gentlemen were nominated in the order given : — Lethbridge, Beading, Curtis, Butherford, Morey, Watts, Worsfold, Hicks. Sherwill, Gould, Keen, Murray, Taylor, P. Thompson. On the motion of Mr Curtis, seconded by Mr Hicks, Mr W. Carthew and Mr G. C. Hill were appointed scrutineers. Mr T. W. K. Foster was appointed Secretary for the meeting. The voting papers having been made out were distributed among the company by the scrutineers. , . ' The Chairman read the definition of a " householder " . from the Education Act, and also described the mode of voting. . Mr Butherford asked some question about the position of teachers, &c, but the Chairman explained that the meeting was not for holding any discussion on school matters, but simply for receiving the report and the" eleotion of a new Committee. Mr Gosling began making some remarks about the good qualities of one of the teachers, but was silenced by cries of " Sit down," and by the Chairman ruling him out of order. The election was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows : — Votes. . A. R. Curtis... ... ... 146 W. Watts ... ... . ... 121 J.Gould ... 97 H. Worßfold..; ... ... 86 F. Y.
