The Fielding Star. AND OROUA COUNTY GAZETTE. SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 1890. Feilding Jockey Club
The meeting held on Thursday night at Mrs Hastie's Hotel of the members of the local Jockey Club, was highly satisfactory. The one great want of the Club hitherto has been a really good course, and that want is now supplied. The space secured, sixtytwo acres, is ample for all purposes, and the terms may be considered as good for all parties to the contract. The Club intends to proceed at once with the erection of a grand stand, fences, &c, and a racecourse and training track will be ploughed and grassed s>o as to be ready in good time for the next meeting. It is believed, and. we joiu in that belief, that the revenue from the sale of the privileges of the new course, with the additional fees which may confidently be expected from the greater number of entries, and acceptances of horses whose owners will be attracted by superior advantages of the new track, will make the Club practically independent of any income derivable from the use of the totalisator, should the. Legislature of the colony abolish the use of that machine, as seems very probable will be the case before many sessions are passed. There can be no question that the Club has been most prudently and economically managed during the last few years, an excellent proof of which lies in the fact that, without any liabilities whatever, the Club has upwards of £400 to expend in buildings and other improvements, and then leave a balance, in hand. We are without fear but that in the future it will be equally well directed. Of course mistakes, and errors of judgment have been made, but there exists no reason why our Committeemen should be incapable of error more than any other body of men. The site of the new course has been selected by men who thoroughly understand the whole of the requirements of a well laid out track. The grand stand will be placed so that its occupants. will not only have a good panoramic view of the several events, but will be sheltered from the prevailing winds and the setting sun, and the roads leading into the course will be made convenient for the passage of carriages, horsemen, and pedestrians. In a couple of years the Feilding Races should be second to no country meeting in the colony.
