It is reported that good gold prospects have been obtained on Maitland Island, near Preservation Inlet, the scene of the rpcent field. It is intended to give the survivors of the barque Emihe a kit costing £15 each, a donation of a few pounds apiece; andj if possible, find them berths when they are able to resume duties. „At {he inquest on the. late mate of the Emile, evidence as to the condition of the vessel was stopped because it was stated that an enquiry would be held to-day. Mr Borrie, Collector of Customs, informed the Nautical Court, before whom the inquiry iB going on, that the vessel being foreign owned Seotion 8 of the Shipping; and Seamens Act would not apply, and it was questionable whether the inquiry was legal. It was only held because all evidence regarding the wreck had not beetaken by the. Coroner at the inquest on the mate. The Coroner then had full power to go into all circumstances of the case. Auckland,, April 23^ Reports from Whangarei state that during the recent rains in that district a flaxmill was swept away, the loss to the owners, Messrs Whitelaw and deary, being estimated at £250. Another mill was swamped. In a letter written by him to Sir G. Grey, Henry George regrets that he will be unable to visit New Zealand during his present tour of the colonies, as his time will be fully occupied in Australia, and he intends to return to England by the Suez Canal about the end of May. |
