The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 1890. "Bad Eggs "
— « There is always, in cases of the bankruptcy of a storekeeper, tradesman, or merchant, a certain amount of blame attached to the individual, and, at the same time, it is more than hinted by wise looking people that he has feathered his nest, or prepared for a rainy day— processes entirely similar. But we never hear a word against those rascally consumers who, by taking the man's goods, and not paying for them} bave been the main cause of his , misfortune. Everybody knows this is the naked truth. When the next Bankruptcy Bill is introduced to Parliament there should be a penal clause inserted for the benefit of that peculiarly objectionable class of people I who make it a means of livlihood to ' get into the confidence and debt of tradesmen without the slightest intention of paying, unless the money is forced from them by legal process; and we all know to our cost what a complete farce that is in ninety- nine cases out of a hundred. Another mode has been proposed — and in one instance, in Palmerston North, it was tried with the most satisfactory result, — which is to advertise the names of all persons who are what may be called " bad eggs," wich the amounts they owe. By these two means the timid would be frightened, and the sensitive would be shamed into honesty, while respectable dealers would get their own.
