(Notes by “ Cheque?’’

The annual meeting of the • Foldings Jockey'Club, which came off on Easter, Monday, resulted, in one of the most successful tee Club has yet held, at Easter, Considering the inconvenience tee public have to put up with through having no grand stand, and tee rough course ownershave to run their horses, the meeting wasa surprisingly good one. The'fields wero not large in any of tee events, but the Club could hardly have expected otherwise under teo . present Although tee fields were small, the racing was very interesting, tee finishes being very close in every event. The attendance was in excess of former years, and. - tee amount put through tee machine, £2754, exceeds the amount that was passed, through last Easter by over £7OO. The total amount put through the totalisator at tee Taranaki Metropolitan Club Meeting on the Ist and 2nd April was only-. £2651, or £lO3 less than we put. through/in one day. ' The Nelson Metropolitan - Club, at their meeting on the 27th. ani 28th March; put through £2807, only beating us by £53 in the two days, andthere is not the slightest doubt had teera been tee same appliances connected wite tee machine Here teat there are on oteer courses, tee total amount would hayo exceeded £3OOO. The Club had’neglected, to have “ races” made for tee investors to. get to the machine man by man. It was ■- tee old style of crushing and knocking - one another io get their pounds ojjr tepir fancy, and through this cause there was pounds omitted every race. This improvement tee Committee 'should see to before their next meeting. Considering tee Feilding Jockey Club haye been rewarded with such great success at their last four or five meetings, ; they should not hesitate now ahnnt fadring some steps to improve tee present state of affairs. If they' are unable to obtain s site for a new course let them epend the £4OO or £5OO they have in hand in . improvements on tee present course. The Rangitikei . Club has to pay a rental of £4O per annum for their racecourse, and all . their improvements, with tee exception of .the grandstand, are really first-class; but still they are not satisfied, and ; they are £ spending yet another £4OO oh improve-.. ments before their next meeting. I would, like to know what is to prevent dur Club from doing the same. Their financial position is equally as good as' the Rangitikeidub, and we have undoubtedly two of the best days in tee year for holding our meetings. I have heard a whisper tfidt there is a> likelihood of another race meeting bring held not a hundred miles from Feilding on tee same day as tee Hack Meeting, unless the Feildmg Club are in possession of a better course by teat time. Our Club, must therefore take steps to- improve ' . > matters at-once.

I regret to- have to record teat our popular sport, Mr Lance, has lost bydeath his mare Sincerity, by Capapie— , Eides, who difd yesterday' morning frqminflammation of tee bowels brought on by influenza. The first symptoms the ' showed . was on Sunday. morning be— ‘ fore tee Easter Races, and \ atoly for Mr Lance he started her be tee Feilding Handicap which no- dtoobt effected the mare more than it . would haye done. Sincerity was; carefully nursed by her trainer. Mr Peters, all through the week, but unfortunately for both her trainer and owner she succumbed yesterday morning. Among her many victories were the Nelson Cup K Marlborough Cup, and Wanganui
