Gard Eddy, Chief Commissioner of Railways, has instituted an action for criminal libel against the proprietors of the Tam worth News, and civil actions against several other journals ar© to follow, his object being to show that an organisation exists to throw discredit on his management of railways. News received from, the New Hebrides reports severe weather having been experienced there. During a gale at Mailicolo the labour schooner Eliza. Mary with 79 souls on board, was wreckud: The first boat launohed from the ill-fated vessel was daehed to pieces, and four Europeans were drowned. The other occupants of this boat were natives, and they were either drowned or. killed by hostile natives on shore. Another European was drowned in attemping to swim ashore; One of the natives managed to fight his way to the Missionary Station and eeoure assistance for the remainder ; altogether 47 natives perished. The majority of the victims of the wreck of the labour schooner Eliza Mary, were tomahawked by natives after reaching shore. ; ::.: n.h i ■:•*-., ,
