Volunteer Items
The Manchester Rifles will have an inspection psrade on Friday the 11th inst. On dit that it is possible there will be, a re-organisation of the Volunteer Force. Anyway officers commanding corps have been advised not to enter, into any engagements or liabilities in connection with the purchase of uniforms until farther informed 'in the matter. We suppose the plain cheap style recommended by the last general, .officer who reported on the N.Z. defences is about to be adopted. The Government having given power to volunteers to have canteens at their encampments is a great change for the, better, ! Hitherto the custpm has been for the "privilege "of dispensing drink to be sold to the highest bidder, who was recouped by the business done with the crowds of yisitors.who thronged the camps, as well as by the volunteers themselves The inconveniences, to put it mildly, arising from such a system have long been condemned by those officers and men who went into camp for instruction; in their military duties. TJnder the new. system the drinking at encampments will be reduced to a minimum. .•. .■;.'•..
