BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

TO THE IS D I TO K OF THE STAH. j Sir, — Dr .Monckton's letter in your .! issue .of 22nd instant plainly shows the wisdom of the ratepayers in rejecting that gentleman, both from the Mayoral chair and a seat in the Council, for a man who will make a stab in the dark (and is not this what his letter amounts to ?) is unworthy of a public position of any kind. While admitting that it is not only the right, but the duty also of every ratepayer to criticise the actions of councillors, I maintain that it should be done in a right spirit. Your correspondent refers to one member of the Council *' who has laid himself open to the suspicion of being influenced by a spirit, of persecution," and taunts him with impure motives. Why has he not the manly courage to name this councillor whom he states has the power to lead the whole Council, and that individual would then have an opportunity of refuting the charges, which I have no doubt exist only in the impure mind of the writer. He accuses our Mayor of taking an undignified position, but who could be if expected to compare with the extreme dignity "of our late Mayor.— l am, &c. ... ■ i . , EDMD. GOODBEHERE. Feilding, 25th March, 1890. ■ "■■ ;
