Fire at Bartholomew's Flaxmill
A fire broke out in. Messrs Bartholomew's flaxmill, Kimbolton road, yesterday afternoon shortly before two o'clock, ._ The fire bell was at once rung and a crowd of people was rapidly assembled on ; the scene. It appears that the fire wa» first discovered under the trough in the work shed The hose belonging to the mill, provided for like emergencies, was at once attached to the steam engine and afull head of water turned on; The, tow ' was in a few seconds blazing fiercely, so much so that Mr John Bartholomew, junr., who was in charge of the hydrant, for some moments feared it would the -mastery ; however, the steam and" water ultimately prevailed and the power of the fire was effectually subdued. By " . this time the Feilding Fire Brigade, with: their new engine, The Victor, had arrived and with this valuable assistance all further danger was removed, The amount of injury done, we are glad to Bay, was, small, the damage being confined to some . of the woodwork in the floor of the build- ing and about a ton. of hemp. Whatever praise may be due to the Fire Brigade for their exertions, there con be no question that the steam engine and fire extinguish- ; ing apparatus attached to the mill saved this valuable property from destruction. j The following are the members of the Bri- •'■' gade who answered to their names when ; the roll was called :— Captain Bray, Lieut, H. Worsfold, Foreman J. Bartholomew, Surgeon Charlton, firemen Collins, Cornish, W. Stevens, Bell ve, Fraser, Bilderbeck, 8. J. Thompson, Koake, Taylor, Eade, Gosling, Donkin, Keen; SayweU-
