The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 1890. The Horticultural Show

The aufcuma show of the Feilding Horticultural Society, to be held on Wednesday next, promises to equal, if not surpass, any of its predecessors. Owing; to the exceptional fineness of the weather which we have experienced for the past few weeks, fruits of all kinds hare been permitted, or rather assisted, to develop all their best qualities both as regards flavour and appearance. For flowers and ornamental shrubs the weather has not perhaps been so good, but what is missed in this respect will be more than made up for in the hothouse exhibits. The arrangements for display of this class of exhibit will be much better than usual, as the tables will have raised centres, so that every plant may be seen to the best advantage. Exhibitors of fruit will be glad to learn that on this and all future occasions, their exhibits will be protected by wire netting from the sharp fingers of those' hungry, but not too honest, youths and adults, who either cannot or do not attempt to resist the temptation to pick and steal which the ripe and luscious fruit affords. We would like to suggest to the managers of the show that it would be a vus> improvement if some restraint were placed on the scores of young lads or boys who gain admittance in the evening, Hitherto it has been their custom to wander aimlessly about "in endless round," neither looking at the exhibits themselves nor allowing the adult visitors to do bo with any degree of comfort, but, on the contrary, exciting an unnecessary degree of irritation from which, under the circumstances, people ought to be exempt. However, that is but a matter of detail which, we feel assured, will be easily got over by the exercise of a little authority on- the part of certain members of the Committee, who might be appointed for the purpose of checking the restless spirits of the youngsters who thus give cause for complain t._ '^
