TIPS BY "MAXIM."

The Autumn meeting of the M.E.C. -will be held on Thursday next, and should furnish a pleasant day's sport. Although the fields for the hurdle race and the Manawatu Handicap are small, the entries lor the other events.must be considered satisfactory. Seven horses have accepted for the Flying Handicap, • which is the first race on the card. This event should result in one of the most interesting races of the day, as every acceptor has placed a win to his or her credit during the last two months. My fancy is Kotuku, but as she is likely to be reserved for the big event, I shall expect to see a good race between Cruiser Cyclone and Antelope In the order namec?. In the Hurdle Eace Oddfellow should have no trouble in defeating his old opponent Gladius, as he is fully a stone a better horse when they last met, and Gladius, judging by his Hawera form, is the reverse. The Dove is not class enough. Twelve horses have nominated for the Hack Hurdle Eace, including a number of untried nags, which makes it hard to select a probable winner. The handicap appear to me to have been carefully compiled. I shall select the top weight Eeee to win, with. Snipe and Kijiberley as the nest best. In the M.E.C. Handicap Kotdkd with 6*12 js too leniently treated, and should have an easy win, and Lenore should beat Antelope and Montrose II for second honors. „ ' ' The Mile Hack Flat, will be the race of the day. Eighteen horses have nominated, and as' the handicap is a first-class one I shall expect to see no more than two or three drop out. Cheque has rethe heavy impost of 10*7, a weight '^that I don't think will stop him if he is -wanted. He is a regular Carbine among our hacks. The next on the list is our local horse Pyramus with 9*o, a weight that will not stop him if he has improved at all since he ran at Turakina. My readers, I ana sure, will only be too glad to hear of his owner placing another win to his credit, as he has had extremely hard luck during his racing career. The next on the list that takes my fancy is Hiainoe, the Somnus colt, with 7*ll. Josephine, 7*7, is another highly bred 'un—by St. George out of Fleurette. She has never appeared in public, and it is hard to say how good she might be. I shall expect the finish to result as follows: — Pybamtjs ... 1 Cheque • ... 2 Hiamoe or Josephine ... 3 In the Stewards' Stakes I shall expect to Bee Kotuku again, with Antelope ;as the, most dangerous opponent. In the Half-mile Hack Flat the .weights , gj.Q Very much similar to title mile. The result of -this race depends entirely on the gtart. I have most fancy for PißAMtrs * Cheqttb .. ; . Steephon . -. . „/("■ ' :-'
