The Federation Conference
By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. I PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. | Melbourne, February 14. The whole of this morning was occupied by the Conference in committee. Mr Gillies was deputed to summon the Convention and arrange a time and place of meeting. Sir 11. Parkes moved a vote of thanks to the chairman (Mr Gillies) and the Conterence closed.
The Age saj's the youth of New Zealand is scarcely a good reason for her standing aloof "from Federation, seeing that she is nearly as old as Victoria, and older that Queensland It may be admitted that her distance from Australia, aud her position in regard to the Pacific islands justify her ambition for a separate career. Tho question is by keeping aloof from Australia, will she be strong enough to withstand possible enemies. New Zealand would always be the weak point in the line of defence, and would require sacrifices on the part of th> people of this contineut, which they might decline to make to a mere out sider. It would be different if New Zealand were part of the --family. Then all the other proyinces would bo in honour hound to spend their laet shilling and their laot man in her defence if required.
