A terrible affair occurred at Copmanhurst, New South Walea, on Monday, January 27. On >atu'rday Cwn table Headlev, of that place, as sisted by his brother, captured on the Gordon Brook station a notorious aboriginal named Tommy Ryan, who esoaped from the Grafton Gaol two months ago, after knocking down the warder. Tommy, who was found in a hut, resisted violently, and the con stable and his brother had all .they could do to handcuff him, the struggle lasting for upwards of twenty minures Tommy, who is a powerful and desperate man, was safely lodged in the lock-up at Oopmanhur&t on Monday, and this morning Headley went to the oell to handcuff him preparatory . to taking him to Grafton. The prisoner resisted being handcuffed, and after, the constable had got one wrist encircled, Tommyjoverpowered Headley, snatched a revolver from the constable's belt, and shot him in the head, the bullet entering his ear and coming out of his mouth. The ruffian also fired a second shot, whioh however did not take effect, and hit tbe constables the head with the butt of the pistol. In a passage leading from the ceU Mrs Headley barred Tommy's escape, and he tried to shoot her, but she got her finger on the trjgger of the revolver,, and prevented him irom using the weapon. He however, made his escape, crossed the river, and is supposed to be uoar hiding in the scrub. A strong body of police are out after Tommy, who"W the revolver, loaded in four chnmbet;B--and will probably offer a desperate* resistance. -
