Perils of the Sea
A letter received from Capt. Howlaad of the whaling barque Canton, at New Bedford, Mass., January 13, dated at sea December oth, and postmarked Capetown, gives au account of the loss by fire of the ; English barque British Monarch, 1262 tons, of Liverpool, from Hamburg to Sydney, N. .W., with a general cargo. Capt. Howland says: "I am on my way to Capetown with part of the crew of the British Monarch. On November 20th the crew discovered the ship was on fire and tried to get at 10 tons of dynamite which were located near the tiie, intending to throw the stuff overboard ahd then start the ship for the Oape of G6od Hope. The fire reached the dynamite which exploded with terrible force, demolishing the vessel. The second mate's boat became sepa« rated from the rest, and nothing was seen of it afterward. " Two ooats containing the captain (William Morrow) first officer (David Welsh), and fourteen others, were picked up. The Tessel was owned by Henry Teruce -and Sons, of Liverpool. The steamship Glengarry, from Liverpool to Rangoon, sank in the Suez Canal, on January 4, after a collision. No lives lost. The British ship King Robert, abandoned off. Cape Horn, was passed November llth by the ship Tizat of San Fran*ifeco. The vessel was blazing fiercely at the- time. I'he was bouud from -Glasgow for Sau Francisco. The *teamer I ardihian. at Halifax, U.S., December. 'Bo, reports passing the ■German ship Shakespeare, from Hamburg, at sea, almost a total wreck. There was nobody aboard, and boats were missing, but the crew it is believed, were drowued as a terrific gale and treuieudous seas were prevalent TbeVessei Was commanded by Captain Muller. /; , '.-'-
