Execution by Electricity
♦ The law recently passed for the State of Now York providing that in future the capital sentence should in all cases be carried o.ut by means -ol electricity seems destined to failure. The electricians were indignant that their noble science should be prostituted to such iguoble purpose. But the lawyers have found another mode of attack. A man now lies under sentence of death hy means of the electric current, but the legality of it, ou the ground that the sentence involves a cruel and unusual punishment in the meaning of the phrase as used in the Constitution, has been impugned. It is suggested that the Legislature may step in and alter the law before all the machinery for appeals can be put in motion, but, meantime, the criminal seems to be in no immediate danger of " electrolethe," as it is' called, al*. though it is more than six months since he was found guilty of a very brutal murder.
