A large nnmber were withdrawn. : Chkistchubch, January 12. Mr E. Cuthbert, Engineer to the drainage Board, states r that the death-rate in the Christchurch drainage district is now 11 per thousand. ' January 10. The man who shot himself at Le Bon's Bay is Harry Daviß, a grassseeder, who went to the Bay by the steamer on Tuesday. He was intoxicated on the voyage, and shot himself in a shed on the wharf after landing. . Five booksellers were charged to-day with selling indecent literature, and fined £2 and coats each. Auckland, January 15. Owing to the falling of a tree, Mrs Erneßte, wife of a Hamerstead settler, was killed at Mareretu, her skull being smashed. A child named Wright -has been killed near Whangarei by falling from a cart. An accident occurred at Mimiha, near Whabgarei, on the 12th instant, when a young man named Williams, the owner of the Qwai Hotel, was drowned. : . An important discpyery ia reported from Dargavilie to-day. During the aiuking.of an artesian well in the centre of the town, a dark blue and gree;i cement*hke stuff, containing black sand, was found at a. depth of' 58 feet from the. surface. A small parcel of the stuff, about 31bs, was panned off| and a residumn of black sand and floury gold was obtained. .
