Late Interprovincial
I PER UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION, j Woodville, This Day. At a public meeting held last night it was resolved to celebrate the jubilee of the colony on the twenty-ninth, by a general gathering of the settlers. The weather has been most unseasonable, cold, and with the continuous rain or showers the hay and grass seed crops are largely destroyed. Auckland, January 13. To-day Chief Detective Browne, of the Auckland force, received notice that his seryice3 would not be required after the loth instant, but that he would be allowed to retire on the. pension of an inspector, as he had previously held that position. A man named McGlyrin, who died today at fiuntly, was supposed to be 107 years old. He fought in the battle of Waterloo. During her cruise in. the. Islands the steamer Wainui, which has returned to Auckland, called at the Kermadec Islands and landed 12 passengers to join the settlement recently formed there. This Day. Apropos of the controversy relative to the proper anniversary day of t>he Colony, Mr Williamson, crown prosecutor, contributes some valuable information. He says if the observance of the 29th in Auckland is traced to its scource, it will be found that that date was fixed and imposed upon us by the Government of the Colony, and is not, therefore, in any sense claimed by the Auckland people, or Auckland district, as the anniversary of this particular portion of the Colony. In the N.Z. Gazette of 1842, page 16, the following notice, " Saturday* 29th insfc., being the second anniversary of the establishment of the Colony, His Excellency the Goyernor has been pleased to direct that day to be held as a general holiday."
