Local and General News

The editrix of the Ladies' Home Journal draws a year. We have to acknowledge receipt of the Government railway timetable for January. .We have to thank the Government Printer for a batch of Parliamentary papers. It is rumoured that the Feilding Football Club intend holding a- grand fancy dress ball at an early date. We are requested by Messrs F. R. Jack" son and Co. to notify that their horse fair in Wanganui, on Saturday, will commence at 11 a.m. " Gipsy King" in the Herald calls attention to the fact that the Foxton Club have not yet conformed to rule No. 17 by giving the name of the Handicapper. Mr Trimble held an auction sale of sundries this afternoon in the sample rooms adjoining the Feilding Hotel. The advertisement did not come to hand in time for publication. Mr Corkery, of Taonui, one of the principal prizetakers at our Horticultural Show, has sent us a buuch of magnificent white turnips grown by him. As a specimen of "local industry" they are very creditable. We learn from the Manawatu Times of a suitable candidate for the vacancy in the Education Board in the person of Mr J. C. Sly, who will be nominated by the Stoney Creek Committee, if he consents to stand. A special regulation applying to the Wanganui section of railways, in last week's Gazette, provides that the maximum rate for butter, in. 4-ton lots, consigned by way of the Manawatu Company's line to Wellington from stations on the Wanganui section, will be 48s per ton. A match haß been arranged between Messrs Gregory and Eoake to run 100 yards, the former conceding 5 yards to the latter. Both gentlemen have been backed pretty heavily and a tight finish is expected. The race is to take place in Messrs Stevens and Gorton's paddock on Saturday, at 3 o'clock. Many of our readers will be glad to learn that Mr H. L. James, of the Parliamentary Library, Wellington, who was for some time a teacher in the State School here, has gained the first prize for the Evening Post Jubilee poem. Mr Charles Umbers, of Dunedin, was second ; and Mr Edward Tregear, of Wellington, third. At a meeting of the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club, held in Palmerston on Monday evening, we learn from the Manawatu Times that it was decided to send complimentary tickets to the Steward, Secretary and Judge, of the Rangitikei, Foxton and Wanganui Clubs, if a similar compliment be accorded the Manawatn Club. It would be interesting to know why the Feilding Racing Club is co studiously ignored. On Wednesday next the Bairnsfather Family of Scotch vocalists will appear in the Feilding Assembly Rooms, when they will give their unrivalled entertainment. The newspapers in the towns in the north, where ths family have been appearing for some time, are unanimous in their praise. Mr Bairnsfather's well told Scotch yarns are very highly spoken of, while the singing of the homely old songs by the young ladies is described as simply delightful. Certainly tlie best medicine known is Sander and Sons' Eucalypti Extract. Test its eminently powerful effeeis in coughs, colds, influenza; the relief is instantaneous. In serious cases, and accidents of all kinds, be they wounds, burns, scalding, bruises, sprains, it is the safest remedy— no swelling — no inflnnofition. Kudarz, the world's greatest conjurer, will make his first appearance in Feilding about the 24th on 25th instant. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 9 a.m. to-day : —Warnings hold good at all places. Hard southerly gales have been experienced in nearly all parts of the colony with heavy rain, and the weather has been inucb. colder 'dining the night. The Sydney Mail of the 28th ult has the following: — " Matterson's backers are fully prepared to give Hanlan a race over the Parramatta and allow the Oanadiau £100 expenses, but it is not likely that Hanlan will come here. It is also stated that Beach is willing to have yet another race with the Canadian on the arrauiatta for £500 a side. Probably Hanlan will think twice before he courts a fifth defeat from the ex-champion." One remarkable feature about the festivities during this Christmas and New Year was the almost entire absence of anything like riotous living of drunkenness. There has been lots of fun we are glad to know, and the hofcelkeepers as well as the other business people, have garnered a rich harvest, notwithstanding. There was one exception, however, — the exception wanted to test the rule — the other day, but he was not " very full" because although the potency of his liquor had for the moment " sent him to grass," yet after a few moments repose near the chemists shop door, he got up on his pins and went on his way placidly but comfortably boozed.
