The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1890. The Onepuhi Bridge

We are glad to be able to congratulate the members of the Manchester Road Board on the stand they have at last taken against tiie extravagant and useless expenditure by the JRangitikei County Council on the Gnepuhi Bridge. Our readers will remember that some considerable time ago an arrangement was made between the two bodies that certain work should be done, and the piles put dowa by boring in the papa rock, a plan which had succeeded admirably j in several well known instances. This work was being proceeded with when there happened one of those slight accidents to which all iron work is liable, and a pin, or something equally trivial, broke. This was quite euottgh to alarm the Chairman of the County who, because he did not understand the work himself, or anything connected with it, took sweet council with other bucolic settlers, and their united wisdom decided that the boriHy process was a mistake, and the only -veti^v'ining mode was to "revert to first pviucipleß " and drive the piles into the river bed with the " familiar monkey." As this means an utter waste of money the practical men in the Manchester Road Board who " have a knowledge of these things," have resolved that now, and for ever, they will refuse to vote supplies to be squandered in such a silly manner. If the Chairman of the Rangitikei Council had consulted the Manchester I Road Board, which has to find one half the money, the thing would not ! be so bad, but to relieve the Road Board of " any say " in the affair, without at the same time relieving I that Board of the monetary responsibility, is cool, to say the least of it. The resolution no.v under notice appears in our report of the proceedings of the Manchester Road Board, and it must meet the approval of every ratepayer interested.
