(per united press association.) i Russell, December 29. News has been received from the Chief Mita te Tai, on the Island of Rawhiti, of the poisoning. of a number of Natives from eatiug honey. Two men and two women are dead, and several others are in a dangerous condition. . Mita's wife and family are amongst those suffering' from the effects. Mita is a' v present at-' tending a wedding at Otaki. His father, Ihaha Hakuene, it will be remembered, died at Parnell from tinned meat poisonmg some months ago. Wellington, December 30. Government seem to think the Tasmania Government has possibly confounded Macquane Island with the islands of the same name off the coast of Tasmania. Until the question is settled the Hinemoa will not leave. This Day." It has been discovered that for the present nothing can be done with regard to annexing Macquarie Islands as it is found they are 'in Tasmanian waters. The object of the Government in securing these islands is to have there a close season for seals, as at "is believed that while vessels arriving in New Zealand with sealskins on board, alleged io have been taken at Macquarrie Island, they haye really been obtained at the Auckland Islands. Auckland, December. 29. A boy seven years of age, named Kellow, was lost m the ranges near Nsraruawabia on Christmas Day, and has not since been found. December 30. The Crown Prince of Rarotongo has arrived in Auckland. He is to interview Mr Mitchelson to-morrow. Christchuech, December 29 Jacksons attempt, to ascend in a balloon resulted in another failure. The valve at the top opened .and tbe gas escaped, and the balloon would not rise. A man whose name is unknowa, died yesterday morning at Flynn's Hotel. Ashley. He put up there on'Thuisday evening, and on Friday afternoon was unconscious in the stable. Mr Flynn did all possible for him, but he never rallied. The cause of death is ascertained to be apoplexy.
