Rifle Championship Meeting

(per united press association.) Dunedin This Day. Capt. Sommerville has secured a splendid range near Wingatui, capable of accommodating any number of targets, and the meeting will therefore be got over within a week. Competitors are to be railed out by special train each morning. at 7 o'clock, returning to town at 6; but as there is a good water supply close to the range it is expected a large number will go into camp. The range is as level as a bowling green, with a natural Background. In SominerviUe's opinion it is unequalled in tbe colony, having tbe additional advantage of never having been fired over. There is great dissatisfaction at the apathy of the local representation of the Association who proceeded to Melbourne, leaving everything in abeyance. The Mayor was requested to call a meeting with the view of procuring funds for tlie Otago match, but the friction hitherto existing between the Commanding Officers in this district and the Association's representation may seriously interfere," though Mr Roberts has undertaken •to act as peacemaker. There is no difficulty in providing telegraphic communication as the telephone line is within a quarter of a mile of the range.
